While Santa and Mrs. Claus were the main attraction in the parade, dozens of groups took part in the parade which looped around Public Square, as candy was thrown from vehicles and floats and books were handed out to children by the Shelbyville Central Schools corporation.
For the first time in recent memory, the Salvation Army had a brass band playing on a float in the parade and played music as people left Friday night.
After the parade, Santa and Mayor Tom DeBaun dropped the first coins in the kick-off of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive.
The event ended with Santa counting down to the lighting of the Christmas tree at the center of Public Square.
For those who did not get to see Santa Friday, there is no reason to fret. Santa's visit times this year are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Santa will also be available on one Sunday, Dec. 22, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
